Idavid Graficks started in Los Angeles in 1982

Idavid Graficks moved to Joshua Tree in 1985
In 1982, David Hockney and his 'Crew' needed about twenty image 'artist proofs' of his new Joiner project. They hired less than half a dozen screen print studios to screen print about four each. There was a LA Louvre Gallery show with a committed deadline. Idavid Graficks performed the best and was awarded the edition screen printing by Petersburg Press of London. They tried to make us a captive shop, but no.
This is the David Hockney Era of "done with Polaroids" - onto much more free form photos (first 110, then 35mm) with very specific background colors. His Crew would have to play image detective on how Hockney assembled the original joiners. The photos would be outlined and numbered in sequence as to their lay down by "the Maestro" and the color matched to David Hockney's dictates (he's VERY picky about color). Ida Foreman WAS our color department and Very Very Good. Idavid Graficks screen printed eighty editions, most always twenty in an edition, some as large as 4 feet by 12 feet. There were five classes of project complexity. We Done Good. |

Desk 1984David Hockney wanted to keep the seam of his original assemblage throughout the edition.
So we had to construct a double thickness, airbrush the seam with the same ink color as the screenprint. |
Idavid Graficks tried to put a handle on this eighty edition effort. We had five classes of project complexity. All the editions were twenty count except for the Class 5 - those were seven per edition. The Class 5 editions were 8 runs: center panel, right panel, left panel, center panel again, right panel again, left panel again, right photo schematic and left photo schematic - all within 1/32nd of an inch. The Grand Canyons were 4 feet by 12 feet and the Brooklyn Bridge was 5 feet by 10 feet. The other classes were a bit easier. The ink was a satin finish scuff resistant solvent based ink so the photo work crews wouldn't damage the color field.
Two decades later, Hockney's denigrated 'Hobby' is now an international image training exercise in many photograph classes.

Idavid Graficks then moved to Joshua Tree after most all the David Hockney Joiner projects and looked for a permanent studio space for a year. While doing so - our 'Art Department' was in Joshua Tree and our 'Screen Printing Studio' was in downtown Los Angeles. That's when we did the WPA project (mentioned in 'More about Idavid Graficks' page).
We found our current home/studio and we worked on our studio facilities and Ida was with child, Arthur Fick in 1986.
In 1987, we introduced ourselves to the Joshua Tree Community by screen printing Play Posters for the Hi Desert Cultural Center.
Back then, the posters were "analogue" - 11" x 17", press type, all hand separation, about a hundred distributed throughout the Morongo Basin (Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree and 29 Palms) storefronts. Idavid Graficks was noticed by the Joshua Tree Community.
The posters always had a white border to frame them amongst the typical dark grey of store windows. We know posters.

Idavid Graficks was making improvements to the Fine Art Screen Print Studio and invested in the 'One Man Printer' for larger sized screen prints. By 1989, Idavid Graficks had the typical AMAZING screen print capabilities up to 30" x 40" which came in handy for the Chaz Bojoquez 'Locos' project and the larger Raymond Pettibon 'Where am I' screen print. Idavid Graficks did about ten Raymond Pettibon editions, two Chaz versions of 'Locos' (Red and White) and a couple of Bob Zoells.
Screen prints below are published by Ed Boswell, color separated and screen printed by Idavid Graficks
Chaz Bojoquez - large 28" x 36" 'Locos', 18 color screen print, White version in the Smithsonian permanent collection, Red version at LACMA permanent collection.

Then there's Waterhead 1992 to 1994, it has it's own page on this site 'Masterpiece'. The finest Robert Williams Serigraph EVER.
After the Waterhead Project and still battling the Bolo Rail-Cycle MegaDump, in 1995-1996 Idavid Graficks got involved in the art preparations and hand-separated color work for our Publisher Ed Boswell/Von Dutch Estate. Things were going smoothly until....
...until Ed Boswell had some business associates who went a bit HARD in dealing business. Note, the dates were 1995-1996...
The Von Dutch Clothing Legacy went through four generations, we were the first of course and we survived.
The "fourth generation" imploded the Von Dutch legacy as one could buy Von Dutch Energy Drinks and Motorcycle Models.
Below is the trailer for 'The Curse of Von Dutch", a Hulu three part series about the Von Dutch Clothing Line and etc......
