Right after Idavid Graficks finished screen printing the Robert Williams Waterhead Project (not curating or release) in 1994,
Idavid Graficks committed to hosting and eventually becoming the Desert Environmental Response Team - DERT. Centrally located by geographic and landline phone conditions, we became headquarters for DERT, Idavid Graficks also became the 'graphics department' of DERT. Broadwell Toxic Waste MegaDump was defeated through CEQA Court in 1995. David Fick became Prez of PAC DERT in 1996. It was a countywide campaign defeating two County Supervisors and three Waste Management GM's in defeating Bolo Rail-Cycle MegaDump which was finally defeated in 1999. Half a dozen convictions followed. Onto the Eagle Mountain MegaDump battle. Ten years of County and State level of opposition to the MegaDump hadn't succeeded - onto the Federal Case. |
MegaDumps:
Broadwell Toxic Waste MegaDump was to be seven miles North of Ludlow, 626,000 tons of Toxic Waste. |
Bolo Rail-Cycle MegaDump was to be East of Amboy and 400 million tons of Southern California Garbage. Much County Corruption involved.
|
Eagle Mountain MegaDump was to be 700 million tons of Southern California Garbage adjacent to Southern portion of Joshua Tree National Park.
|
Both Bolo Rail-Cycle and Eagle Mountain MegaDumps were to be fed garbage by railroad efforts.
|
Besides the MegaDumps, Idavid Graficks was involved with the Village of Joshua Tree issues mostly involving Land Use issues.
Increasing sensible shooting regulations for Eastern San Bernardino County 1988-1992. Increasing Joshua Tree National Monument visitor safety in 1992 with centralized satellite emergency phone. Helping save Joshua Basin Water District in 1993.

David Fick was a board member of Joshua Tree Community Association 1993 - 2016, Charter board member of the Copper Mountain College Measure 'C' Oversight Committee 2005 - 2014, Boardmember of the Joshua Tree Municipal Advisory Council - Head of Landuse Committee 2006 - 2012 and board member of Morongo Basin Conservation Association 2005 - current.
All these boards had many endeavors too numerous to mention here.

The most important victory for the Joshua Tree Community Identity and environmental protection was the Section 33 battle of 2006 - 2012. A second generation out of state developer wanted to mass vacate Section 33 (a sq. mile with 12,667 Joshua Trees) for Joshua Tree Villas with 2800 housing units and 30 acres of Commercial development along Hwy 62. He had a super majority of support from the Yucca Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Joshua Tree Gateway Association of Realtors (ironic ain't it?).
Idavid Graficks was the lead in opposing that development as JT MAC Head of Landuse Committee and President of MBCA 2008-2009. As MBCA Prez, David helped coordinate the Mojave Desert Land Trust and the Marine Base Easement needs to create the MDLT Section 33 Community Park finally in 2012. As seen here, Section 33 is a healthy young Mojave Forest.

Two other notable Landuse victories for the Joshua Tree Community was coordinating the legal representation for defeating a wayward Altamira Gated Community by the Ad Hoc JT105 Alliance 2016 - 2019 and the NextEra JT Solar (110 acre Industrial Solar project) vs Joshua Tree Community for Responsible Solar 2015 - 2017. David was the core member of both steering committees. There's more JT Stuff but you folks have enough.
Ok, more Joshua Tree stuff, to be specific - the Western Joshua Tree Petition support efforts since 2020. My good friend Christina coordinated demonstrations of the WJT support and was also involved with me in some front line battles with developers involving illegal Joshua Tree destruction even before the first CA Fish & Wildlife Commission hearings in September of 2020.
Written, video and audio evidence was submitted to the F & W Commission that destroyed the credibility of several major opponents of the Western Joshua Tree Petition in their efforts to convey their current "protection" of Joshua Trees.
The CA Western Joshua Tree Conservation Act is now law and the concern is in play against careless development interests.

David Fick is currently on the Joshua Basin Water District board using his three decades of Land Use experience for Joshua Tree.
